Pool Of Virkie:

A Short History Of The Pool Of Virkie:

In the late 15th and early 16th centuries the Pool Of Virkie was the main Hanseatic trading centre in the south end of Shetland, (the Hanseatic trade was a league of northern european countries that dominated trade along the coasts of northern europe)

The pool became known at the time as 'The Dutch Pool' , This was because the local people pronounced Deutsch as Dutch.

It was at the end of the 16th century that the pool silted up has remained much the same to this day.
